Masks Will Stay Through Next Year, Herd Immunity is Not Close: Dr. VK Paul

NITI Aayog, Dr. VK Paul said that Indians will have to keep wearing masks over the next year to fight against Covid. He added that we need a studied combination of vaccines, effective drugs, and disciplined social behaviour.

The veteran paediatrician stated that we cannot rule out the possibility of a third wave of the pandemic and added that herd immunity won't be achieved for another three to four months, reported NDTV.

"There is a period of the next three-four months when the vaccine is rolling up to build the Great Wall of herd immunity. We need to protect ourselves and avoid the outbreak," he said when asked about the possibility of a third wave of Covid-19 in India.

He cautioned that India is entering a risky period as there are several public festivals lined up. Warning against the season of big festivals like Diwali and Dussehra, and he stated that they could potentially lead to a massive spread of illness if not managed well. 

He added that he hopes the world gets lucky with medicines to fight Covid-19 as it did with vaccines. Dr. Paul emphasised that effective medicines are required to stall the progression of Covid-19 in patients.

India's public policy think-tank member said that he is confident that UN's WHO will come out with a positive response about the status of WHO's approval for Covaxin, the anti-Covid vaccine developed in India.
