MUMBAI: Mumbai police formed Nirbhaya squad amidst the rise in the number of Violence Against Women (VAW) cases.
Police officials said that the Nirbhaya squad will be there in every police station of Mumbai.
Chief Minister of Maharashtra Uddhav Thackeray held a meeting with the Director General of Police and Mumbai police and other senior police officers at the state police headquarters regarding this.
The state is facing pressure after a woman was raped and brutalised by a man in a vehicle. She died due to the injuries in a hospital.

Nirbhaya squad will work on preventing or dealing with violence against women and children.
The squad will consist of a lady sub-inspector (SI), a woman constable along with a male constable and a driver, who will regularly be on patrolling duty.
Female assistant commissioner of police of an inspector level woman officer will be the nodal officer who will frequently review and supervise the functioning of the Nirbhaya Squad.
Officials from Nirbhaya Squad will be gathering information about the wrongdoings from children's homes, orphanages, hostels, etc.
