The human body can survive without food for up to three weeks. But, you will die of dehydration in three to four days. 70% of the human body is made up of water and we are constantly losing it through urine and sweat. Nutritionists and health experts insist that keeping the body hydrated is the key to a healthy body. Yet, most people are clueless about what they are drinking. Water also balances the electrolytes in the body. But, how many times have you been confused between choosing mineral water and sparkling water? If you often struggle to make a choice about water, here is a guide to give you clarity about types of drinking water.

1. Spring Water

Spring water is the 100% natural form of water. It is the underground water that surfaces naturally above the ground. Typically, spring water is free of contaminants because it was stored underground. You can filter the water to remove unwanted particles. Spring water is the best choice for drinking water. It is mineral-rich and has a clean, refreshing taste. It may have a slightly alkaline pH. This will neutralise the acidity in the body and strengthen the bones. Spring water is also known as glacier water. However, buying bottled spring water may not have the desired effect as the companies can lie about the source of the product.

2. Sparkling Water

Sparkling water is another popular type of drinking water. It is commonly served in restaurants and hotel rooms. The bubbles emerging from the water makes people happy. However, those bubbles are carbon dioxide gas. Sparkling water has no other impurities or contaminants you need to worry about. Even with all the carbon dioxide bubbles, it is still healthier than other aerated drinks. If you are fond of drinking soda, switch to sparkling water as it doesn't contain harmful chemicals like soda. But, there are no minerals in sparkling water. Regular consumption of it may lead to stomach ulcers and increase the risk of osteoporosis.

 

3. Mineral Water

Mineral water is often sold in bottles and advertised the cleanest water. It is clean and the name is apt too. It is either mineral-rich water collected from wells or with artificially induced minerals. Sometimes, minerals infused in the form of mineral drops. This water will have micro minerals like chromium, copper, manganese, molybdenum iodine, selenium, iron, and zinc in small amounts. It may also contain unprocessed sea salt which contains over 80 trace minerals. Drinking mineral water will balance the electrolytes in the body. The minerals will be absorbed faster as they are already in their iconic form. However, it is not suitable for people with high blood pressure due to high sodium content.

4. Distilled Water

As the name suggests, this water is produced by distillation. It is clean without a trace of contaminants. It has no other health benefits because the minerals are lost in the process of distillation. The free radicals created in the purification process may create an imbalance in the body. Distilled water is not typically recommended for water due to the lack of mineral deficiency. Regular consumption of distilled water may cause rapid sodium, potassium, chloride, and magnesium loss.

Purified water is also clean without any contaminants. The purification can be done through distillation, deionisation, and reverse osmosis. It will eliminate all kinds of bacteria, algae, fungi, parasites, metals, and chemical pollutants. It is known to absorb toxic substances from the human body and eliminate it. Purified water has a fresh smell and taste. However, it has the ability to absorb carbon dioxide from the air. The purification process is typically performed in a plant. But, nowadays, smaller purifier machines are available in the market. Installing a water purifier at home will provide pure drinking water in the comfort of your home.

6. Tap Water

Tap water is the go-to source of drinking water in most homes. Water is collected from various sources including wells, rivers, streams, lakes, and reservoirs and purified before supplying to the public. It may have the taste of chlorine as the chemical is used to kill bacteria. However, sometimes, tap water may carry traces of fertilisers or pesticides which can make you sick. It may also have naturally occurring minerals like arsenic, radon, and uranium. It is widely used for household chores such as cleaning, cooking, gardening and washing clothes. Boiling or purifying the tap water before drinking is recommended.

7. Well Water

Well water is similar to spring water. It comes from underground and has naturally infused minerals. It is commonly used for drinking in rural areas. It may contain bacteria and microbes that can make you sick. But, surviving them will make the immune system stronger. However, boiling or purifying this water is recommended. If you are regularly using the water from the well, routine toxin screening is recommended. Test the water for bacteria, nitrates, and pH levels. You can also install your own filtration system. Cleaning the well on a regular basis also keeps you safe.

8. Alkaline Water

Alkaline water is generally processed by electrolysis and has a pH that is more basic than acidic. Sometimes, it can also be obtained naturally in spots like springs. In such cases, water flows over rocks and picks minerals, thus, increasing the alkaline levels. Drinking alkaline water will regulate the body's pH level by neutralising acidity. It not only supports the immune system with the presence of natural elements but cleanses the colon and eliminate acid reflux symptoms. But, high alkaline levels can backfire and cause bone health to decline. however, it may lower the stomach's ability to kill harmful bacteria as it reduces the stomach acidity.

9. Flavoured Water

Flavoured water is sweetened with artificial sweeteners. Hence, it contains natural or artificial flavouring agents. It will have a distinct, mostly pleasant taste than plain water. The taste makes it an interesting alternative to plain water. While it may help to drink more water in order to stay hydrated, the artificial sweeteners may lead to weight gain and blood sugar imbalance.
