If someone in your family test positive for the novel Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) then it is important that you take all necessary steps to avoid infection and prevent other healthy members in your family from getting infected.

Dr Vikrant Shah, intensivist and infectious disease specialist at Zen Multispeciality Hospital, Mumbai, said that the interaction with close family members who are infected tend to spread the infection.

He said in an interview that if a person in a family shows major symptoms of COVID-19 like dry cough, fever, sore throat or cold, then he or she should be isolated immediately.

Pick a person with good immunity to take care of the sick person and this caregiver should also stay in isolation.

Wash the utensils used by the sick person separately as there is a chance of infection spreading. Wear gloves while disposing of the items used by the patient.

Keep elderly people, pregnant women, and children, away from the sick.

The patient's temperature and oxygen levels should be checked regularly.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) revealed most COVID patients can be treated without the need to admit them in a hospital or medical facility.
