Over the past nine years, Game of Thrones has become one of the most popular TV shows across the world. The show has become a cult favourite, and it blew up internet several times with spoilers and theories. The world is eagerly waiting for the Game of Thrones Season 8 which is also the final season of the show. Ever since King Robert and his family marched to Winterfell, the characters have come a long way, but not all. Many of them did not make it to the final season. Thanks to George R. R. Martin’s willingness to kill off one or two favourite and important characters once in a while.
When season 6 ended, it felt like the beginning of another era in Westeros because powerful women had become the head of all major houses. It was no surprise for Game of Thrones fans. It seemed like an inevitable turn of events because the show had many strong, badass women. Some of the female characters have gone through an impressive transformation, and some stood their ground like rocks.
As we are gearing up for the much-awaited finale of the Game of Thrones to be released on the 14th of April this year, here is a look at the nine badass female characters of Game of Thrones.
The Lady of Winterfell is probably the strongest character on the show. She started off as a naive teenage girl who only wanted to marry the prince and give birth to royal babies. Today, Sansa Stark is the beloved mistress of North. All she wants is to protect her people and safeguard Winterfell from all foes and keep her family together.
In her teen years, she watched the decapitation of her father and became the puppet of Petyr Baelish. She was married off twice as part of political games and raped. At the end of it, Sansa Stark emerged as a resilient, sharp leader who makes a better ruler than Jon Snow. Sansa even put an end to Lord Baelish’s life who is responsible for the chaos in which she lost her family.
The North and the rest of the world will always remember what a badass Arya Stark is. Unlike her sister, she was born as a fighter. While her mother disliked her being a tomboy and tried time and again to push her to learn ladylike arts such as embroidery, Arya sneaked into her brother’s playground and practised archery. No wonder Jon Snow’s farewell gift for her was a sword named Needle. And she was never hesitant to use her beloved Needle whenever there was a need.
11-year-old Arya Stark was left alone in the big bad world of King’s Landing after her father’s death. But, she survived through the dark mysterious lanes, sometimes even disguised as a boy. Her fierce side was seen some days when she tore off the face of men she killed. She trained in the house of faceless men and used her skills for revenge. Her ‘list’ is a dangerous place to be as many of them in the list were killed. The fans were overjoyed when Arya wiped out the entire house of Frey with a smile on her face for betraying her brother and mother to death.
Brienne is the only surviving child of Lord Selwyn of Tarth. She is a force to reckon as she is the only person ever to beat Gregor Clegane aka The Mountain in combat. Throughout her childhood, she was ridiculed for her not-so-feminine appearance. When she was 16, her betrothed asked her to give up her sword training. She agreed to it with a condition - only if he can beat her in combat. The betrothal was broken as her fiance ended up with three broken bones. Arya Stark and Jaime Lannister admired Brienne for her skills and loyalty.
She is the daughter of fallen, mad king Aerys II Targaryen. At the beginning of the show, Dany was one of the two remaining Targaryens (or so we thought). She was sold to Khal Drogo by her brother in the hope of getting the Khal army in return. But, Daenerys emerged as the Mother of Dragons and even escaped the death that engulfed her husband. Today, with her eye on the iron throne, she is all set to fight the army of Night King. Daenerys Targaryen is probably the least confused, strongly determined and undeterred character on the show.
Margaery Tyrell is probably the most beautiful woman on the Game of Thrones. But, that is the least interesting thing about her. She is smart and determined. She walks through a hall full of cunning politicians as if she knows that all will perish in the end. She has an agenda, and she is patient with it.
The audience knew that she was important right from the moment she walked in. We had pegged for the final race to the iron throne. Paired with her grandmother Olenna Tyrell, she was unstoppable. Tyrell women are strong for the devotion for their family too. Olenna Tyrell killed Joffrey Baratheon only to prevent her granddaughter being married to a horrible person.
When Margaery Tyrell died in the wildfire explosion at the Sept of Baelor, audience were shocked. She probably could have lived because she was the first and only person to realise the trap. However, the brave heart was not willing to escape alone leaving her brother and father to die.
She is probably the only evil person to make it to the list of ‘badass female characters of Game of Thrones’. Over the seasons, the world has fallen in love with the sinful ways of Cersei Lannister. She has only gotten worse in each season with her unapologetic, selfish, and cruel acts. You can try to love her but her consistency with plotting revenge and greed will not let you.
Cersei did love her brother and children. But, with all her children were dead, she had no love left in her heart. She is one of the smartest women on the show. Even Margaery Tyrell and Olenna Tyrell couldn’t beat her.
Her brother Theon Greyjoy admires her and looks at her as a protector. He says, “she is your rightful ruler. Those of you that have sailed under her, and there are many of you here, you know what she is! She is a reaver! She is a warrior! She is Ironborn! We will find no better leader! This is our queen!”
Yara Greyjoy is popular among GOT fans for her indecisiveness. She fights for justice and makes clever alliances. She is proud of everything about her and goes for anything she wants. Many of the fans were rooting for Yara and Ellaria Sand to emerge as a power couple. Yara’s fate isn’t yet sealed. Show’s fans are waiting for this badass to return.
Ellaria Sand is one of the most powerful female characters on Game of Thrones. She is from Dorne, and the culture is embedded in her personality too. She and Oberyn Martell, the prince of Dorne is probably the most openly unconventional couple in the show for their sexuality and choices. If Cersei Lannister had the heart to be open about her sexuality, many noblemen like Jon Arryn and Ned Stark would have been alive. Ellaria Sand isn’t one to forgive and forget. She mercilessly killed Cersei’s daughter Myrcella Baratheon to avenge Oberyn Martell untimely death.
