Reese Witherspoon is one of the highest-paid actresses in the world. She began her career in 1991 as a teenager. Even though she gained popularity as a lead actress in many acclaimed movies, she became an icon by playing Elle Woods in 'Legally Blonde' in 2001. Witherspoon shattered the stereotype 'blonds are dumb' or 'pretty, fashionable woman are not smart' with the movie.
Some of her best performances came after that. She won an Academy Award for the movie 'Walk The Line'. However, Witherspoon went through a not-so-great phase in her career. But the actress came back as a producer. Her production house Hello Sunshine was founded to make women-centric movies.
Speaking about her new passion at the Woman of the Year, Witherspoon said that she realised how popular culture has been portraying women as followers. She quoted mother’s advice: “honey if you want something done, do it yourself’.
Hello Sunshine debuted with two movies in 2014 - 'Gone Girl' and 'Wild'. Both movies grossed over half a billion dollars worldwide. They were critically acclaimed and loved by the audience. Rosemund Pike played the lead character Amy in 'Gone Girl' and received nominations for Academy Award, BAFTA Award, and Golden Globe Award among many others. Witherspoon herself played the lead role in 'Wild' and it bagged another Academy Award nomination.
Hello Sunshine later produced a TV show named ‘Big Little Lies’ which revolves around the life of five complex women. The show received 16 Emmy Award nominations and won eight of them. It stars Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Shailene Woodley, Laura Dern, and Zoe Kravitz. The actresses won Golden Globe Awards and Screen Actors Guild Awards as well.
