The closure of schools due to the novel Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic has affected the education access of at least 27 crore students across India, according to a report by UNICEF.
This happened due to financial or technological disadvantages students face such as accessing online classes for students, strategies, and follow-up measures. And, there is a large rural-urban and gender divide in access to internet services.
Parents who can afford the internet tend to prioritise their sons over their daughters because, during the lockdown, daughters are forced to do household duties.
The report added that this is in addition to the six million girls and boys who dropped out of school.
