Kumbh Mela Should Now Only Be Symbolic: PM Modi

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that Kumbh Mela should now be "symbolic" due to the massive increase in the number of COVID-19 cases. 

As part of the event, large number of people gathered along the banks of the Ganga, in the last few days, sparking nationwide concern.

PM Modi said that he appealed to Hindu Dharma Acharya Sabha president Swami Avdheshanand Giri Ji Maharaj regarding the large gatherings as part of the Kumbh Mela.

India has reported 2,34,692 cases of COVID-19 in 24 hours and Maharashtra is the worst hit state.

There are 1,45,26,609 cases of COVID-19 and out of that, 16,79,740 are active cases, 1,26,71,220 people have recovered and 1,75,649 people died due to the disease. 

Delhi has overtaken Mumbai to become the worst hit state due to COVID-19.
