LONDON: During the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Britain’s Team GB will have male and female flagbearers for the first time in the country's history at the opening ceremony.
Chef de mission Mark England said that the move would leave a “real hallmark legacy message” as now, national teams can appoint female and male flagbearers at the Games.
England added that this will also send a message about how women and men should be treated as equals in sports.
As per earlier rules, the Olympic Games had to choose either a man or a woman to carry the national flag during both opening and closing ceremonies.
Since 1906, out of 26 British flagbearers, only three have been women.
Anita Lonsbrough was the first female flagbearer in Britain.
