Dr. Philipose Mar Chrysostom, died at a private hospital in Thiruvalla in Pathanamthitta district at the age of 103.
He is one of the oldest religious leaders in India, often known as a priest of wit and wisdom and for publicly criticising rigid beliefs and fundamentalists.
He was the senior-most Metropolitan of the Malankara Marthoma church headquartered in Thiruvalla.
As the "father of wit and wisdom", he stood firmly on his secular beliefs.
With a career span of 68 years, he was the world’s longest-serving bishop and was well-known for his warm friendship with all across religions.
In 2018, he was awarded with the country’s highest civilian honour of Padma Bhushan.
