Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati took to social media to ask the ruling Uttar Pradesh government to reconsider Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Ordinance, 2020, which is also described as a the anti-love jihad law.
She said that this new ordinance is full of doubts and requested the government to reconsider it.
She added that forced or deceitful religious conversion is not acceptable but there are laws in place to protect people from that.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath-led UP Cabinet had cleared the ordinance which gives punishment of 10 years and fine for “love jihad” related offences.
The calls for the law came to light after a woman was killed by an alleged boyfriend for refusing to convert.
