Disappointed over the present state of the Congress party, Senior Congress leader Salman Khurshid said that Rahul Gandhi’s self-defection was the biggest problem the Congress party now is facing. Though the vacuum he has left was abridged by Sonia Gandhi, she was only a temporary arrangement for the stop-gap.
The former Union Minister said that a new chief might be chosen after the October state polls and added that he wishes that Ms Gandhi wasn't treated herself so. He also added that the party hasn't been able to analyse the reason behind the massive defeat.
The veteran politician said that the party would have been able to analyse things better if Rahul Gandhi had stayed. He expressed disappointment about the former chief leaving despite the members' "earnest pleading".
He also spoke about his deep pain and concern about where Congress is as a party at the moment. He said that he will not leave the party no matter what happens.
Mr Khurshid said that even though he is not the president, Rahul Gandhi remains the main leader of the party. He also insisted that the party hasn't lost confidence in their leader because of the major defeat in the Lok Sabha elections.
He said that Sonia Gandhi should lead from the front and become permanent president. "We have very less time and the party should take some immediate steps," he added.
