BAREILLY, UP: The Uttar Pradesh police registered the first case under the news ordinance promulgated by the state against forced and dishonest conversions, against a Muslim man.

Avinash Chandra, additional director general (ADG), Bareilly zone, said that the case is based on a woman's father who claimed that he is pressuring her to convert to Islam.

The state governor Anandiben Patel had signed the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Ordinance, 2020, on November 28, 2020.

The call for laws against forced conversations, which fundamentalists describe as "love jihad," became intense after a woman named Nikita Tomar was killed for refusing to convert to Islam by her alleged boyfriend.
