Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray announced that the Aarey metro car shed project has been scrapped and it will now come up at Kanjurmarg in Mumbai.
The car shed project will be shifted to government land in Kanjurmarg and no cost will be incurred.
The building which has come up in Aarey forest will be utilised for some other public purpose and will not go into waste.
The government had earlier declared 600 acres of Aarey land as forest but now it has been revised to 800 acres and there will be no infringement of the rights of tribals in the Aarey forest.
He spoke about the importance of Aarey forest cover, which is regarded as the city's lungs, and the biodiversity there needs to be conserved and protected.
Last year, citizens and environmentalists protested against the Aarey project and felling of trees in that area, and they were arrested or detained under Sec 144.
Thackeray said that the cases against citizens and environmentalists who protested have been withdrawn.
After Thackeray came to power following Maharashtra elections last year, he reiterated the importance of Aarey forest conservation.
