MALAPPURAM: A pregnant elephant died after she was fed with a pineapple full of explosives by the locals, in a shocking case of animal cruelty.

The elephant left the forests of the Silent Valley in Palakkad district and entered a nearby village looking for food.

Locals offered it pineapples with explosives, fearing that she might attack, as per reports. The pineapple exploded in her stomach leaving her severely injured.

Forest officer Mohan Krishnan, who was part of the Rapid Response Team to rescue the elephant, expressed his grief saying that the elephant trusted the locals and feared for the baby.

He also pointed out that the elephant was never dangerous.

She walked up to the Velliyar River probably to relieve the pain and died there.

The Forest department will give the elephant a proper funeral. So far no action is taken against the locals. FIR is filed against unidentified offenders.
