A form of ultraviolet (UV) radiation can effectively kill the novel coronavirus that causes COVID-19 (novel Coronavirus disease) without hurting people, according to a study published in the American Journal of Infection Control.

During the ongoing race for an effective vaccine, scientists said that since this UV radiation is safer to use around humans it may be used as a potent disinfection system for occupied public spaces.

Ultraviolet-C (UVC) light with a wavelength of 222 nanometers (nm) effectively kills the SARS-CoV-2 virus without hurting or penetrating human skin.

222-nm UVC, effective is anti-microbial technology, is less harmful than 254-nm UVC because far-UVC light has a very limited penetration depth in the skin or eyes.
