India has recorded 38,146 new Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours, and it is 7.2% lower than the day before. Yesterday also saw the lowest death count in 104 days with 499 fatalities.
There are 4.21 lakh active cases currently, and it has decreased by 995 in the last 24 hours.
Kerala and Maharashtra continued to be the states with most cases. Kerala reported 13,956 cases yesterday, and Maharashtra reported 9,000 cases. The Kerala government has relaxed Covid-19 restrictions for three days in view of Bakrid despite the consistently high number of infections. The Indian Medical Association said that it will approach the Supreme Court if the state government does not withdraw the order.
Several states in the Northeast were forced to announce a new lockdown or extend the ongoing one due to the surge of Covid-19 cases driven by delta variants.
The union health ministry said that the country has so far reported 3.11 crore cases and 4.14 lakh deaths. The data shows that the nationwide test positivity rate continues to decline and has remained below 5% for 28 consecutive days. It is at 2.61% currently.
Delhi's state bulletin showed that not a single fatality was reported yesterday. The positivity rate is 0.07% currently and 51 new cases were reported yesterday.
Dr. Samiran Panda, Head of Epidemiology and Infectious Diseases at the Indian Council of Medical Research said that the third wave of Covid-19 is likely to hit the country by the end of August.
