India has recorded 86,498 new Covid-19 cases and 2,123 deaths in the last 24 hours. This is the lowest single-day count in 66 days. It is also the first time in 63 days that the daily count dropped under one lakh.
The tally of Covid-19 cases in India now stands at 2,89,96,473 with 13,03,702 active cases. The number of active cases dipped by 97,907 yesterday alone. Recoveries continue to outnumber the daily new cases for the 26th consecutive day, with a rate of 94.29%.
Maharashtra continues to be the worst-hit state, followed by Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh. Yesterday, Maharashtra reported 10,219 cases and 340 deaths. The most populous state Uttar Pradesh has an active caseload of 14,000 and will be lifting the curfew from all districts. The Chief Minister's office said that the night curfew (7 PM - 7 AM) will continue.
Mumbai completed administering 94,942 doses of vaccine on Monday. It is the highest for the city in a day. 75% of the doses were distributed by private centres. Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that vaccination will be made free for the 18-44 age groups as well and states will no longer have to procure vaccines from the manufacturers
Kerala has extended the lockdown till June 16. The state reported 9,313 new Covid-19 cases and 221 related deaths yesterday. The chief minister's office said that the lockdown is extended because of the high positivity rate still prevailing in the state.
