India recorded 29,163 new cases of COVID-19 in the past 24 hours and the number of daily cases has been declining for six consecutive weeks. Only 30,548 cases were reported on Monday morning.
For the past 44 days, the number of recoveries has been outpacing daily infections.
The union health ministry update said that the countrywide tally of COVID-19 now stands at 88,74,290 cases and the number of active cases continues to stay below the five lakh-mark. 82,90,370 patients have recovered so far. The country recorded 449 fatalities yesterday. This has pushed the death toll to 1,30,519.
The health ministry tweeted a graph showing the number of daily cases from August to November 16. It shows that the cases were rising till mid-September and falling after that. 97,984 cases were reported on September 17.
The Centre has formed multi-disciplinary teams to visit private hospitals in the national capital to check the status of compliance to guidelines issued by the Union health ministry. The teams will be reporting back in two days.
A US-based biotechnology firm called Moderna Inc has announced that its vaccine candidate is found to be 94.5% effective after phase 3 trials. Two other companies Pfizer Inc and BioNTech SE have also announced that their vaccine is more than 90% effective.
