Gujarat High Court ruled that depression can be classified as a serious illness, especially during the COVID-19 (novel Coronavirus disease) pandemic.
The high court made his observation while setting aside the cancellation of a student's admission, who failed to appear for exams due to mental health problems.
The student who studied in Surat-based Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology (SVNIT) had failed to earn 25 credits which are required for for getting promoted to next semester and his admission was canceled as a result.
The student said that he was dealing with depression and suicidal thoughts.
He challenged the cancellation saying he was battling depressive episodes from January 2020 till the mid of year.
