MUMBAI: News channel Republic TV and two other TV channels have been accused of tweaking ratings to get high advertising rates, said the Mumbai police.
They said that households designated for monitoring ratings were being bribed to put on the channels, the Police said.
The owners of a Marathi channel and an English channel have been held by the police.
This news comes amidst the row between Mumbai Police and Republic TV over the Sushant Singh Rajput suicide case.
Republic TV targetted the Mumbai police's role in protecting culprits and for their investigation in Rajput's suicide.
Republic TV has been campaigning hard for the late actor's justice and had also questioned All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) which declared that the actor died by suicide and not murder.
Mumbai police said that the two channels, Fakt Marathi and Box Cinema, owners have been arrested and the directors and promoters of Republic TV are being investigated for rating fraud.
Case of criminal conspiracy, cheating and criminal breach of trust has been filed against all three channels.
Right-Wing channel Republic TV had claimed the highest TRPs or Television Rating Points among news channels.
Police said that the probe will cover all aspects including the channels' income, bank details and ad revenue.
Republic TV channel head Arnab Goswami said that the case is Mumbai police's attempts to defame the channel over their questions regarding Sushant Singh Rajput suicide case.
Mumbai Police chief Param Bir Singh said that Republic TV has created false narratives around the actor's case.
Recently, actress Rhea Chakraborthy received bail in drugs-related Rajput's death probe.
