MUMBAI: Due to the extension of nationwide lockdown, several films will be released on Over-The-Top media platforms to meet the expectations and early release.
Bollywood films 'Gulabo Sitabo', 'Shakuntala Devi', and South Indian film ' Ponmagal Vandhal' will be released directly on Amazon Prime.
'Gulabo Sitabo' is directed by Shoojit Sircar with Amitabh Bachchan and Ayushmann Khurrana in the lead roles. The film will debut on Amazon Prime on June 12th.
Vidya Balan starrer 'Shakuntala Devi'will be released directly on Amazon Prime. Directed by Anu Menon, the film is about ace mathematician and feminist who aced many obstacles to earn the accolades.
South Indian star Jyothika's film 'Ponmagal Vandhal' will premiere on Amazon Prime on May 29th as confirmed by her husband Suriya's production company 2D Entertainment.
The decision has been taken because chances for low-budget films to succeed on OTT platforms is higher when compared to theatre releases post-COVID lockdown.
However, reacting to this news, multiplex INOX on Thursday expressed its "extreme displeasure and disappointment."
INOX said that these are tough times but cinema and content creators have benefitted mutually for years.
