NEW DELHI: Former wicket-keeper Farokh Engineer cleared up his comments on selectors serving tea for Anushka Sharma after the actress released a hard hitting statement on the issue.
Engineer said his comments were directed at the selectors and not Anushka as a person and apologised to the Bollywood actress.
He accentuated that he didn't intend to drag 'Band Baja Baraat' actress into this issue and regarded her as a "lovely person". He also lauded her husband and India skipper Virat Kohli as a brilliant captain.
He said that the whole matter was blown out of proportion and he didn't want that to happen.
He conjured controversy when he said that he saw one of the selectors serving tea to Anushka Sharma during a World Cup match while arguing that that's all they did.
Later that day, Anushka wrote a long statement and posted it on her social media handles condemning the whole of dragging her into false stories and for blaming her for Virat Kohli's bad performance.
She said that she goes to cricket matches after paying for her flight tickets and travel. She sat in the family box and not the selector's box.
She ended her statement saying that she drinks coffee and not tea, taking a dig at Engineer's "she is served tea" comments.
Anushka had often faced trolling whenever Virat performed badly in cricket. She was blamed when Virat was out for a duck in 2015 WorldCup semi-final match against Australia. Virat himself was warned when he was seen talking to Anushka during cricket matches.
Virat and Anushka have been dating since 2014 and got married in 2017 in Italy. Anushka was last seen in 'Zero' opposite Shah Rukh Khan and Katrina Kaif.
