Deepika Padukone Honoured With Crystal Award For Work On Mental Health

MUMBAI: Bollywood actress Deepika Padukone has received the 26th Annual Crystal Award for raising awareness on mental health issues. She is also the only Indian actress to feature in the winners' list of Davos 2020.

Deepika said that it is an honour for her to receive the award and dedicated her award to millions who suffer from mental health issues like anxiety, stress, depression and other forms of mental health illness.

She said that as many as 300 million people are suffering from mental health issues and depression is one of the causes of health issues and disability in the world. It is also regarded as one of the contributors to the global burden.

Deepika was diagnosed with clinical depression in 2014 when she was at the peak of her career. She underwent therapy and medication to treat herself. To help people, she launched the 'Live Love Laugh Foundation' to spread awareness on depression and started a lecture series as well.

'The Live Love laugh Foundation' received the Dr Guislain 'Breaking the Chains of Stigma' Award, 2019.

She first spoke about her experiences in an interview with Barkha Dutt and it received over a million views.

Deepika is currently promoting her film 'Chhapaak' which is also her first film as a producer. The film is based on the real-life fight of acid attack survivor Laxmi Agarwal and is directed by Meghna Gulzar.

'Chhapaak's trailer opened to widespread acclaim and several people including acid attack survivors Katie Piper and Rangoli Chandel appreciated the film.

She will also be seen in Kabir Khan's '83 as cricketer Kapil Dev's (Ranveer Singh) wife Romi Dev.

Deepika is also working on the Mahabharata adaptation which is narrated from Draupadi's point of view.
