Bhanu Athaiya, India’s first Oscar winner for best costume design, passed away yesterday at the age of 91.
She was diagnosed with meningioma in 2012 but had continued to work.
For a while, she was the only woman costume designer in the country.
Some of her noted works include 'Pyaasa' in 1957, 'Chaudhvin Ka Chand' in 1960, 'Sahib Biwi aur Ghulam' in 1962, 'Brahmachari' (1968), 'Guide' (1965), 'Agneepath' (1990), and 'Lagaan' (2001).
She won the Oscar for her work in Oscar-winning film 'Gandhi.'
She shared her 1982 Oscar for Gandhi with John Mollo. Director Richard Attenborough praised her work by saying that she is a revered doyenne of Indian costume designers.
She returned her Oscar in 2012, fearing the security of her award.
