The latest episode of ‘Game of Thrones’ met with mixed reviews from fans over the character development and plot point. What angered the fans was the conversation between the Hound and Sansa Stark. While celebrating the victory of ‘The Long Night’, they have a moment together. Hound says that she should have left the King's Landing, where she was facing the wrath of former fiance Joffrey Baratheon and Cersei Lannister daily, when he offered her the chance. He added that she could have avoided the pain inflicted by her late husband Ramsay Bolton and Littlefinger's manipulation.
Sansa replied by saying without them she would still be a 'little bird'. She indirectly regarding the harsh experiences she had at the hands of the two men for making her the leader she is.
Fans of the 'Game of Thrones' called this a problematic explanation as it means that her character is made because of the abuse she faced.
" Sexual assault survivors aren’t made strong by those who assaulted them. We are strong because of us. Sansa is powerful because of her choices and development. She is not strong because she was “broken in” - also thanks for such a disgusting line GoT," wrote a fan.
CAn we also get mad at the Hound and Sansa conversation where he said she got broken in rough?? and then Sansa saying that she doesn't regret it because it made her a better person???? No rape survivor in the history of life has ever thought this WaT The fuck— Shanno Banano (@wimpycatlady) May 6, 2019
continuously disappointed with got's choices around sansa. being a survivor of r*pe/sexual assault does not make you "more of a woman." her character arc has had so much potential and is just time and time again half-assed and honestly just constantly disrespected— natalie watson [KEYBLADE MASTER] (@nataliewatson) May 6, 2019
Sansa was sold to Ramsay Bolton by her mentor Littlefinger who is meticulous and cunning. Ramsay marries Sansa and rapes on their wedding night in front of her cousin. The episode was also criticised for depicting rape.
Sansa then extracts her revenge after her brother Jon Snow defeats Ramsay in the battle of the Bastards by feeding him to his hounds.
Fans argued that she had witnessed so much more like her father's beheading and red wedding.
She saw her dad's beheaded in the public square, and had to deal with the murder of her mother and brothers. But apparently, only Ramsey Bolton's sadism could make her a complete woman— Dan Nguyen (@dancow) May 6, 2019
Anti-rape activist Wagatwe Wanjuki called out the problematic trope of surviving trauma.
"Survivors thrive in spite of their abusers, not because of them," she wrote.
#Gameofthrones used that dangerous trope about surviving gendered violence makes a woman develop character and become stronger and I am pissed.— Wagatwe Wanjuki 🇰🇪 (@wagatwe) May 6, 2019
Survivors thrive in spite of their abusers, not because of them.
'Game of Thrones' was criticised for including unnecessary rape scene such as the scene where Jaime rapes Cersei next to their son Joffrey's corpse. Dany's relationship with her husband Khal Drogo included him forcing himself on her though, in the book, they had consensual sex.
The series has just two episode before the conclusion.
Actress Sophie Turner plays the role of Sansa Stark. She will be playing Jean Grey in the upcoming film 'X-men: Dark Phoenix'. She also married her boyfriend and pop singer Joe Jonas.
