Experts put forward their concerns regarding a reported increase in the R-value. R-value or reproduction number is the expected number of cases directly generated by one case in a population where people can be infected.

Researchers at the Institute of Mathematical Sciences, Chennai, revealed that R-value in the last week of August rise to 1.17 as against 0.89 between August 14-17.

Sitabhra Sinha, the lead researcher, said this number is much higher than the last time there was a scare of a third wave.

This is driven by several states having their R-value go over 1 in the last few days of August - most notably Kerala and Maharashtra, but also Mizoram and Jammu and Kashmir," said Singh.
