WASHINGTON, US: US Vice President Mike Pence told House leaders that he does not support invoking the 25th Amendment process to remove Donald Trump in a letter to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
He said that such an action is not for the best interest of the nation but it is a political stunt by a democrat.
Republican leaders have been urging not to remove Trump from office with just eight days left in his presidency.
However, speaker Pelosi and democrats said that Trump should not spend one more day in the office due to the coup he instigated with his lies and earlier refusal to concede.
Democrats said that removing Trump is a larger message to the future leaders, that nobody is above the law.
Pelosi has said Pence's failure to trigger that process would lead to a Trump impeachment vote.
Trump had earlier refused to concede the elections and went to allege election fraud and stealing of votes.
This led to a violent insurgency in the US Capitol where people stormed into the building raising slogans against Pence and Pelosi.
People stormed into the Senate hall and Pelosi's office. The police were caught being lenient towards the crowd though many others were trying to neutralise them.
After the Capitol violence, senators confirmed the victory of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris as President and Vice President respectively.
Post confirmation, Trump gave a statement condemning the Capitol violence and expressed his willingness for a peaceful transition of power. Now, amidst the move to impeach him, Trump said that impeachment will lead to "more violence."
