NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tributes to Mahatma Gandhi and Lal Bahadur Shastri on their birth anniversaries.

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, also known as Mahatma Gandhi, was a lawyer and an anti-colonial nationalist who played a crucial role in India's Independence from British rule.

Oct 2nd, 2021 marks his 152nd birth anniversary. United Nations, in 2007, said that October 2 will be observed as the International Day of Non-Violence which aims to "disseminate the message of non-violence."

This year, United Nations secretary-general Antonio Guterres stressed upon the need to usher in a new era of peace and tolerance.

Lal Bahadur Shastri was India's 2nd Prime Minister and a key figure in India's independence movement along with Mahatma Gandhi.

Shastri is known for his slogan ‘Jai Jawan Jai Kisan’.
