COLOMBO: Sri Lankan police arrested beauty pageant judge and former Mrs. World for assault after she snatched crown on stage from "Mrs. World."
Caroline Jurie yanked the crown off Pushpika de Silva minutes after she was declared "Mrs. Sri Lanka 2020" after saying that as per pageant rules, divorced women cannot be crowned.
De Silva needed hospital treatment after the incident, seen by stunned spectators in a packed venue.
Senior police official Ajith Rohana said that Jurie and (her associate) Chula Manamendra have been arrested in connection with a charge of assault and causing damage to Nelum Pokuna (theatre).
Pushpika De Silva said to the media that she is willing to drop charges if Jurie is ready to apologise to her in public.
"I can forgive, but not forget," she said. A court hearing was fixed for April 19 and Jurie and her associate who crashed the stage were released on bail.
Jurie had claimed that de Silva was divorced and therefore ineligible for the prize, towards the end of the ceremony.
De Silva is estranged from her husband though she is still legally married to him.
Chandimal Jayasinghe, the local franchise holder for the pageant, said they were "deeply disturbed and sincerely regretted" the behaviour of Jurie on stage and backstage.
Social media calls have been mounting to strip Jurie of her "Mrs World" title and re-crown De Silva.
