The Dharwad Zilla Panchayat has decided to train more women to drive garbage collection tippers.

Women drivers will be visiting every household in the gram panchayats of the Dharwad district to collect waste. More than 50 women will be trained from the Self-Help Groups (SHGs) soon.

The Sanjeevini SHGs were formed under the National Rural Livelihood Mission (NRLM) and registered under the State Cooperative Act. It has 10-20 women members on average who make a livelihood training and gets financial assistance through the NRLM and Karnataka State Rural Livelihood Promotion Society (KSRLPS).

The new sessions will be for the women who have expressed an interest in working in the garbage collection in dry and wet conditions. They already have received training for garbage segregation on the same. This will be the first of its kind in the Dharwad district.

Suresh Itnal, CEO of Dharwad Zilla Panchayat, said door-to-door garbage collection was introduced in 89 of the total 144-gram panchayats. The drive involves three members each for a tipper in each gram panchayat. “Once the training under the first phase concludes, we will send the second batch,” he added.
