Out of 15 Indian unicorns of 2022, five have a woman partner in their founding team. Falguni Nayar is the first solo woman entrepreneur, who launched the startup called Nykaa, a popular Indian e-commerce company. Nykaa became a unicorn in April 2020. In 2022, five startups such as LEAD, Oxyzo, Amagi, Hasura and Open will enter the unicorn club with at least one woman co-founder. Mabel Chacko is one of the co-founders of India’s 100th unicorn Open Financial Technologies.
Mabel Chacko said that she always strongly believed in gender equality in the workspace. Her investors used to ask about work-life balance in the initial years. However, today they are aware of gender-neutral ideas. Currently, more women-led startups are raising funds and entering the unicorn club, investors are also trying to be a part of the women-led businesses.
“MobiKwik and Zaapay co-founder Upasana Taku, Priti LXME co-founder Rathi Gupta, and SALT’s Udita Pal are some strong women leaders in India. The participation of women in the Indian financial sector has increased significantly”, said Ruchi Kalra, co-founder and CEO of fintech unicorn Oxyzo. Around 214 fintech and financial services startups co-founded by women launched in the last 12 years.
