ICC called off the Women’s ODI World Cup qualifier in Harare following the emergence of a new COVID-19 variant in the African region. The Women's WorldCup was set to be held next year.
"The decision to stop the event was based on its concerns about how the participating teams would head back in the wake of Omicron variant’s rise," said ICC.
Removal of the qualifiers would mean that Pakistan, West Indies and Bangladesh have to make the cut on the basis of rankings.
ICC Head of Events Chris Tetley said that travel restrictions from a number of African countries being imposed at such short notice prompted them to call off the qualifiers.
They are concerned that some of the teams would be unable to return home.
