Laxmi Agarwal is a social activist and an Indian campaigner who works for acid attack survivors and for their rights. She has founded the ‘Stop Sale Acid’, a campaign against acid violence and sale of acid. Laxmi faced the brutality of acid attack when she was only 15, by a 32-year-old man named Gudda for rejecting his relationship proposal. The incident did not weaken her instead she started a legal fight against acid attacks by collecting 27,000 signatures for a petition to curb acid sales and taking the cause to the Supreme Court.
Her petition led the apex court to order the central and state governments to regulate the acid sale and parliament to make the prosecutions of acid attacks easier. Her courage to fight against this societal evil gained much support and appreciation. Laxmi this year received the ‘Women Empowerment Award’ from IWES and Unicef award for her campaign Stop Sale Acid. In 2014, she has received International Women of Courage award by former US first lady Michelle Obama.
She was chosen as NDTV Indian of the Year. And in 2014 Laxmi hosts a television show, Udaan, on New Express and she was chosen as brand ambassador for a women fashion company ‘Viva N Diva’. Her inspirational life story is been taken for a Bollywood movies ‘Chhapaak’. In the movie directed by Meghna Gulzar, Deepika Padukone is playing the role of Laxmi.
