LOS ANGELES, US: Duchess of Sussex Meghan Markle wrote to the United States congress to provide paid family leave. She cited her own experiences as a new mother.
"I'm not an elected official, and I'm not a politician. I am, like many, an engaged citizen and a parent," she said in her letter.
She had two children with Prince Harry; Archie and Lilibet.
She is advocating for paid leave as the party's lawmakers debate whether the provision will make it into President Joe Biden's sweeping Build Back Better social spending bill, after having her own experience.
Meghan Markle made it to international news this year for exposing the British monarchy's internalised racism and misogynist treatment of her, after her marriage with Prince Harry.
They revealed it as the reason why they left the Royals to pursue a life of their own.
Since then, Meghan has been vocal about social issues. While royals are not expected to take any stand on partisan politics, Markle vocally advocated for women's rights.
