According to the latest National Family Health Survey report, one per cent of women consume alcohol compared with 22 per cent of men in India. Alcohol intake among women is highest in Arunachal Pradesh and among men is highest in Goa. The NFHS survey has been conducted in 6.737 lakh sample households in 707 districts in 28 states and eight Union Territories. It covered 7,24,115 women and 1,01,839 men in India. In addition, four per cent of women and 39 per cent of men between the age group of 15 to 49 years use tobacco products.
The survey noted that 15 per cent of men drink alcohol almost every day, 43 per cent use it once a week, and 42 per cent less than once a week. Among the women who use alcohol, 17 per cent drink every day and 37 use it once a week. Among the women between the age group of 15 to 49, 18 per cent consume alcohol in Arunachal Pradesh, 15 per cent in Sikkim and among men, 59 per cent in Goa, 57 per cent in Arunachal Pradesh, 50 per cent in Telangana and one per cent (the lowest) in Lakshadweep.
