Delhi court stopped the execution of the four Nirbhaya rapists who were scheduled to be hanged on March 3rd. Judge Dharmendra Rana said that the last-minute mercy petition filed by Pawan Gupta is still pending before the President.

As per the law, death row convicts will be given 14 days' time to prepare for the execution after the president rejected the mercy petition.

Nirbhaya's mother reacted to the development saying that the law protects the criminals and not the victim. She opined that the staying of the execution for the third time is the failure of justice.

Mukesh Singh, Akshay Thakur, Vinay Sharma and Pawan Gupta are the four men convicted of gangraping and torturing a 23-year-old paramedical student in moving on Dec 16th, 2012. The case shocked the nations and massive protests were seen across Delhi for several days.

Four men are sentenced to death. So far, Mukesh Singh, Akshay Thakur, and Vinay Sharma have exhausted all legal options. Pawan Gupta's mercy petition bought them more time.
