TOKYO, JAPAN: Neeraj Chopra brought an end to a long wait by creating history with his gold medal win at the Tokyo Olympics in the men's javelin throw event. He won with a throw of 87.58m in his second attempt.

He is the first Indian in over 120 years, and the first athlete from independent India, to win an Olympic medal in a track-and-field event.

He is the second Indian to win an individual gold medal in Olympics after shooter Abhinav Bindra.

Gold medallist Abhinav Bindra wrote a congratulatory note on social media for him, welcoming him to the club.

"To win a gold at the grandest sporting event in the world, which is held once every four years, is in itself so improbable that less than 3% of 11,707 athletes competing in Tokyo will end up with one," he wrote.
