NEW DELHI: Finally the Congress Working Committee has decided to fill up the vacant position of party’s chief two months after Rahul Gandhi left the chair taking the accountability of massive failure in the 2019 national elections.
In a meeting to be held today, the party will name the veteran leader Mukul Wasnik for the presidential post, however Rahul Gandhi wants a deep consultation before making a decision, said sources.
On Friday at the Congress leaders’ meet, Gandhi made it clear that a deep consultation with state leaders and the legislature party have to be done before entrusting someone the party’s responsibility.
According to PTI, Rahul Gandhi told party leaders that he was happy that party was under pressure and this would push the Congress into action.
As of the party sources, the senior leader and former minister Mukul Wasnik who has great experience in the administration will take up the charge at least till the party choose a chief through an organisational election.
And this is for the first time in two decades may a non-Gandhi will choose for the Congress’ presidential post.
It was Rahul Gandhi’s decision that the party should find a non-Gandhi as Congress’ chief because in its 134-year history, party mostly had a Nehru family member in the steering seat.
Rahul Gandhi, his mother and UPA Sonia Gandhi and Sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra are very active politics but they refused to hold the superior position despite many requests from party circle.
When Rahul Gandhi submitted the resignation taking the accountability of party’s debacle in the recently concluded Lok Sabha election, almost all the senior leaders requested him to withdraw the resignation.
But Gandhi stood strong on his decision and declared neither him nor a member from his family will hold the position furthermore.
Senior leaders like AK Antony, Ahmed Patel and KV Venugopal have attended the meeting held at Sonia Gandhi’s residence. Sources said, they asserted that there would be no more delay on choosing a new Congress president.
