India observes National Education Day on November 11th and it is also celebrated to commemorate the birth anniversary of India’s first Education Minister Maulana Abul Kalam Azad.
The decision to celebrate Azad's birth anniversary as National Education Day was taken by the Ministry of Human Resource Development on September 11, 2008.
As the Education Minister, he promoted research in eastern learning and literature and set up the three academies to develop the fine arts.
He advocated for women's education and free compulsory education for all children up to 14 years of age.
He contributed to the establishment of educational institutes like Jamia Millia Islamia, IIT Kharagpur, University Grants Commission, All India Council for Technical Education, Kharagpur Institute of higher education, University education commission, and Secondary education commission.
