On Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi commissioned the INS Vikrant, India's first aircraft carrier of indigenous design and construction, elevating the nation to a narrow group of nations with the domestic capacity to produce such sizable warships.

At a celebration held at the Cochin Shipyard Limited at this location, he officially launched the carrier, which cost Rs 20,000 crore to build. With the commissioning of Vikrant, India became one of a few countries with the specialised capacity to design and construct an aircraft carrier domestically.

Several dignitaries, including Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, the Kerala Governor Arif Mohamad Khan, the state Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, the Ernakulam MP Hibi Eden, the Navy Chief Admiral R Hari Kumar, and top Navy and state officials, attended the ceremony.

To commemorate the addition of INS Vikrant to the Navy, which was given the name of its predecessor who was instrumental in the 1971 Indo-Pak conflict, Modi unveiled a plaque.

Modern features are included with the carrier.
