In a consolation note addressing the late Sushma Swaraj’s husband Swaraj Kaushal, the Congress Parliamentary Party Chairperson Sonia Gandhi said that she felt Sushma’s loss very greatly.

The one-page letter was tweeted by the Congress party’s twitter account.

“Sushma-ji lived a life of honour, filled with achievement and contributions to the country she loved; respected and admired by all Indians,” she wrote.

She added that her thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved family and hoped the family could draw solace from the fact.

In the letter, she paid tribute to administrative capabilities demonstrated by the late leader.

“She made herself accessible to even the humblest person, established a warm rapport with people from all walks of life and with her empathy and compassion gave Indian diplomacy a human face as she reached out to help every Indian citizen in distress," she said.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also mourned her death. He said that he was shocked to hear the death of veteran leader.

The former external affairs minister was known for her quick-witted and prompt response on Twitter to grieving Indians abroad and to foreign nationals in India.

Sushma joined the Bharatiya Janata Party after the emergency. She was an active member of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad prior to that, during the 1970s.

Sushma Swaraj is the Indian Parliament's first and the only woman MP honoured with the Outstanding Parliamentarian Award.

She passed away on Tuesday night after suffering a cardiac arrest in national capital Delhi.

“Sushma was a lady of extraordinary gifts, her courage, determination, dedication and ability manifest(ed) in every position she held,” added the Congress leader in the letter.

She called Swaraj a “superb orator” (that often saw Sushma take on the Congress led government) and a “great parliamentarian,”. Adding to this, Sonia Gandhi stated that they had a “rare gift for friendship that won her affection and admiration across the political spectrum.”

Swaraj was one among the BJP's most loved leaders as her interventions ranged from seeking information on relatives stranded in avalanches in other countries to families who needed help in bringing home a relative's body from abroad as a foreign minister.
