Rahul Gandhi, the leader of the Congress, slammed the BJP on Thursday in response to the alleged kidnapping and murder of two Dalit girls in Lakhimpur Kheri, Uttar Pradesh, saying women's protection cannot be expected from those who assist in the release of rapists.
The two adolescent girls were discovered on Wednesday hanging from a tree in a sugarcane field about a kilometre from their home, within the boundaries of the Nighasan police station in Lakhimpur Kheri, according to the police.
On Thursday, six persons were detained in relation to the rape and killing of the two girls.
"The kidnapping and murder of two minor Dalit sisters in Lakhimpur in broad daylight is a very disturbing incident," tweeted Rahul Gandhi.
"Women's safety cannot be expected from those facilitating the release of rapists and welcoming them," the former Congress chief said in an apparent reference to the 11 convicts in the Bilkis Bano gangrape case being set free last month from the Godhra sub-jail after the BJP-led Gujarat government allowed their release under its remission policy.
Gandhi emphasised the significance of making the nation a safe place for women.
